hi guys I'm Franco from adventure biketroop.com and this video we want to
0:06
chat about helmets now after you've bought your expensive adventure bike one
0:12
of the most expensive pieces of safety gear is gonna be your helmet and you
0:16
always want to buy the best quality helmet you can afford I mean it's your
0:22
life after all now picking the wrong type of helmet for your adventure bike
0:27
trip can be quite costly if you have to replace it with the right type for you
0:32
so knowing a little bit about the different types of helmets can save you a
0:36
lot of money so in this video we're going to chat about two main types of
0:40
helmets the full face street helmet and the dual sport helmet I've written a
0:49
blog post on this and you can check it out at adventure biketroop.com slash
0:55
which dash helmet it's in the description below as well now there I
0:59
chat about a few other types of helmets as well and I covered it more
1:03
comprehensively so this video we're just going to chat about the advantages and
1:07
disadvantages of these two main types so let's start with the full face street
1:13
helmet now the biggest advantage of this is the aerodynamics especially if you're
1:20
going fast on the highway maybe your adventure bike doesn have a tall screen and the wind is gonna catch you now if it aerodynamic it less strenuous on your neck muscles to keep your head straight and if the wind comes from the side it
1:34
less of a fight to keep your head pointing in the right direction so it is
1:38
more comfortable it's also quieter inside because it shuts so tightly with
1:44
this face shield it keeps out the weather and the rain very well and if
1:49
you close this it's quiet inside it's more comfortable as when less vibration
1:55
and wind noise because it doesn't have anything on top it's more aerodynamic
1:59
the problems with this is it's the biggest problem probably is because it's
2:05
quite small you can see the space inside from your nose to the front section there
2:09
is quite small so if I split this on it's quite a tight fit that I can hardly
2:15
fit in the finger here in the front so it can get quite claustrophobic
2:21
helmet air there and if you're going slowly in the sand you're backing your
2:25
bike say going up a rocky hill or pushing your bike when you got stuck it
2:31
can get quite claustrophobic inside you're gonna sweat a lot and that could fog up the face shield another problem is dust getting in so if you're riding
2:41
behind other riders and the problem with this is because it's so small here you can use motocross goggles with this helmet there not enough space to fit the goggles inside and also if there Sun from the front so say you riding late morning early afternoon or early evening and the Sun is a little bit above the horizon there nothing
3:01
keeping the Sun out of your eyes so even if it's quite low you have to use your
3:06
hand to shield and the Sun which is quite annoying and that is the main
3:10
advantage one of the biggest advantages of the dual sport helmet is this peak
3:14
here at the top it can it's very effective at keeping the Sun out so even
3:19
if the Sun is quite low at the horizon and you're riding in the dust behind
3:23
your mates and you can just tilt your head and you can keep out most of the
3:28
Sun and still hold both hands on the handlebars now the nice thing about these
3:33
dual sport helmets is it's much wider it's much bigger so this front chin
3:37
section is much further away from your face making it more airy inside there's
3:42
more airflow as well and it's much bigger opening so if you do open the
3:47
face shield riding slow then saying there's a lot more fresh air in your face
3:51
cooling you down so it's less tiring you can use your motocross goggles with this
3:57
it fits nicely inside there so it's almost the shape as a dirt bike helmet
4:01
okay so what is the problem with these dual sport helmets the the peak
4:07
obviously catches quite a lot of wind so if you're going fast at highway speeds
4:12
you don have a tall windscreen it could be quite a strain on your neck muscles and if it comes from the side there could be a vibration and it much more noisy inside but don shut as tightly because it more space the wind gets in there so it less
4:26
comfortable than the road helmets if you're going fast so obviously you can
4:34
take the peak off you can stash it in your bag so that will help with the wind resistance so if you are gonna ride quite a lot of highway hundreds of miles
4:44
on the tarmac fast rides then a road helmet or a full face suit helmet is not
4:51
a bad choice if you are gonna mix it up and you're gonna ride tarmac and lots of
4:56
dirt road and more of the tricky stuff a dual sport helmet probably is the best
5:02
compromise not everyone agrees and I actually decided on the road helmet and
5:08
and I'm very happy with it but to be honest if I had the cash at the moment I
5:16
would probably go for a dual sport helmet next but mine still fine and so I
5:21
use it wherever I go in any conditions thank you so much for joining us that's
5:27
it for this discussion on the different types of helmets for your adventure bike
5:31
trip go check out adventure bikedroop.com slash which helmet for more on which type of helmet is
5:39
best for adventure bike riding cheers guys
